Flag: an ensign or colors; a standard; a banner as a mark of distinction, rank, or nationality
'Flag' in Scripture is actually referring to a grass or weed type plant that grew along roads and waterways. (See Job 8:11, Exoduds 2:3-4&5, Isaiah 19:6). Flag is a modern day word that means a small banner, a cloth attached to a pole. We use flags today in private worship times as well as in corporate worship services. The different colors used in the flags represent the focus of the worship or prayers being sent forth.
My first encounter with worship flags was in the late 90's ~ I went to a Christian Arts Festival with some friends. During the Worship service, a time to come sit before the LORD was offered, and I went up to the front and knelt down. Shortly, I felt the presence of the LORD very strongly and sensed being wrapped in His wings. Then I felt a 'breeze'. I looked up and a person was using a large set of wing flags behind me, praying over me. I was amazed!
About a year later, I was in prayer at a community worship service when I heard a direction from the LORD to "Make some flags". So I did. But I also started to study what Scripture had to say about them. It was important to me to know what I was doing, and why. The first flags I sewed were rectangle flags of lame material with a casing that I glued onto wooden dowels. I took them to the Meeting Place the next time and put them out to be used ~ and they were! Adults and children alike had a marvelous time worshiping God with them. I was delighted.
A little while later, my Pastor told me he would like to see them at the church. So for quite a while I carried them back and forth ~ Meeting Place to Church ~ still delighted that the LORD would be so glorified with the flags. Then one Sunday morning during worship I received the call ~ "Pick up the blue one" I instantly argued with Him ~ "I made the flags for You ~ but I don't do that thing!" He continued to call ~ I continued to argue for a bit ~ but as usual ~ He won out! (Why do I even try?) Anyway ~ I picked up a blue flag ~ started waving it a bit ~ then more & more ~ and after I raised it high in surrender ~ I fell flat on the floor in the Spirit for the rest of the Worship time. I knew right then and there that God had designed me to make ~ and worship Him with ~ the flags.
Since those days, I have experimented and improved many different designs of flags. I have studied deep into the meanings of the different colors and purposes to use the flags. The Holy Spirit has been a wonderful teacher over the years. One of my passions is to engage in personal worship time, dancing and twirling with My Beloved!
