Banner: a flag or ensign
Standard: pole with a flag, flag especially ensign of war; royalty
Banners are also called Standards in Scripture. They meant a colored and decorated cloth attached to a pole that was easily recognizable as a rallying points during military operations and encampments. Often marches in battles or in victory celebrations were led by the tribal banners or standards. They were used for several purposes.
*One of them was to identify where each family was to camp or gather. They would look for the Banner of their Father's House, as in Numbers 2:2 ~ Everyone of the children of Israel shall camp by his own standard, beside the emblems of his father's house, they shall camp some distance from the tabernacle of meeting. When we use Banners or Standards that speak of our God, we gather under the Banner of our Heavenly Father!
*Another was to unite people. Isaiah 11:12 ~ He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.
*They were used to proclaim victory: Psalm 20:5 We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions. And Jeremiah 50:2 ~ Declare among the nations, Proclaim and set up a standard, Proclaim ~ do not conceal it ~ Say, 'Babylon is taken, Bel is shamed. Merodach is broken in pieces, Her idols are humiliated, Her images are broken in pieces.'
*Best of all ~ Banners are used to worship! Song of Solomon 2:4-5 ~ He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love. Sustain me with cakes of raisins, Refresh me with apples, For I am lovesick. Also in Exodus 17:15 ~ And moses built an altar and called its name, The -LORD-Is-My-Banner.
Our triune LORD, (God ~ Jesus Christ ~ Holy Spirit) is always our Banner, to identify with, to unite under, the God who gives us victory ~ the only One who we worship!
Creating beautiful and elegant Banners to proclaim God's character and nature, using His Holy Word is one of my very favorite projects!
